The overall champion of the 2008 Beijing Olympics is….. (drum roll please)
Wait. China is currently in the lead with 45 Golds, 15 silvers and 21 bronzes. USA is in far second with 27 Golds, 28 silvers and 28 bronzes. But it is still mathematically possible to catch up. There are still games to be played till the 24th. Miracles can happen anytime. The overall championship is still up for grabs.
USA has dominated every Olympics since the break up of the USSR in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. I remember when I was still in high school, my bet was always the USSR. China was a close third in 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney, but came out strong to finish as runner-up in the 2004 Athens Olympics.
This year is different. Being the host, China has all the advantages. They can field players in all fields. Imagine China’s billion population. Compound that with a sports program that mixes the traditional (think of the kungfu movies) and the modern techniques of science.
I think it won’t be long when China will dominate the sports currently dominated by the West like basketball and football. Coincidentally, football is said to be originating from China 3000 years ago.
So, should we all concede and declare China as the overall champion of the 2008 Beijing Olympics?
