It will be raining fists on the boxing ring in Las Vegas on May 2. Pacquiao and Hatton will finally slug it out after sorting out their disagreements. Fans, boxing experts and aficionados got a scare when the promoters of the Manny Pacquiao vs Ricky Hatton fight announced the other day that the fight was called off because of the revenue split disagreement. Hatton’s camp pulled the plug when they told their US promoters to look for another worthy opponent. The Filipino fighter’s camp demanded 60% while the best compromised offer is around 52%. The Pacman eventually relented and signed the contract anyway, at 52-48 split. Like a switch bulb, the fight was on-off-on.
Pacquiao and Hatton will both get the biggest purse in their boxing careers this May 2. Both fighters prevailed in their last fights. Manny’s convincing victory over the Golden Boy De La Hoya clearly overshadows that of Hatton’s victory over Paulie Malignaggi. Ricky’s loss to Mayweather Jr is still repeated over and over and somehow diminishes his appeal to the non-British crowd.
Maybe boxing is no longer about punches, knock-outs, belts and victories. We’ve heard countless times about revenue split disagreement. Our hero Manny is quite known in his haggling. 3% of the De la Hoya fight may have been nothing to the big boys in the US, but it is already something big here in the Philippines.
But wait, is the fight really a done deal? According to an AP article, Hatton had not yet signed the contract. They can still insist on the 50-50 as they best argued that they can bring more money on the table. Yeah, British money! A 2% compromise is something Hatton’s team can just blink on, without necessarily feeling underestimated.
Anyway, the finalization of this fight is just a signature away. Barring pre-fight disasters and injuries, this would be the hands-down fight of the year.
