Australian Open 2009: Semifinals Results Predictions

The 2009 Australian Open is now on its last few days and we will know the names of the victors by the end of this week. But for now, here are my semifinals results predictions for men and women’s tennis:

Rafael Nadal vs Fernando Verdasco – Putting aside my bias against Nadal, I think the world No. 1 has what it takes to hurdle his gritty opponent. Verdasco played big against Andy Murray, and he even put aside last year’s runner-up, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 4 sets. And when you beat the pre-tournament favorite and the last year’s finalist, a lot of expectations follow it. But when you are in top form, it does not mean that you can beat anybody. Nadal is a very strong player and shows that he can play at any surface better than anyone else. He is not the top player for nothing.

My prediction: Nadal in 5 sets.

Roger Federer vs Andy Roddick – I was not expecting Andy Roddick to reach this far. But the American is in great shape lately and eliminated the defending champion Novak Djokovic in the quarters. In any of the grand slam, Andy had not beaten Roger. This will be their 18th encounter, and Andy won only twice in their last 17 meetings. Tough really!

Roger showed top form in beating Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro, in a devastating 6-3, 6-0, 6-0. If that form continues, Andy will expect frying when he meets with the world no. 2.

My prediction: Roger in 3 sets.

Dinara Safina vs Vera Zvonareva – Dina, the world no. 3 will face compatriot and world no. 7 Vera. Safina is Marat Safin’s younger sister. I have not really followed the careers of these two gals, but I will be for the underdog.

My prediction: Vera in 3 sets

Elena Dementieva vs Serena Williams – Serena is the only non-Russian in the crowd of four. But the no. 2 seed has an arsenal of powerful shots that can derail any opponent. She had proven herself many times in the past and this could be another one of those. Elena, on the other hand, could not be taken for granted, but at this point, I’ll root for the American.

My prediction: Serena in 2 sets.

Update: Actual results at the end of this day:
Roger Federer won in 3 straight sets
Safina dumped Zvonareva in 2 sets
Serena triumphed in 2 sets.
Tomorrow is the big game of Nadal vs Verdasco
