Real Madrid vs Liverpool is another exiting clash of two football heavyweights. Real Madrid, the 2008 La Liga winner and holder of the most number of Champions’ League trophies, will host the 2005 Champions Liverpool at the Bernabeu on February 25, 2009.

With frequent managerial changes in the past years, Real Madrid hasn’t been as lethal as it should be. They are currently chasing FC Barcelona at the Spanish League by seven points. But the trophy is still within reach. Having disposed off Robinho to Manchester City, they are not without other excellent strikers in Raul, Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Arjen Robben. Their recent 6-1 trashing of Real Betis at home, will give them an emotional edge over the visitors this Wednesday.

However, Liverpool could not be counted out. With Captain Steven Gerrard declared fit to play in the Santiago Bernabeu, we expect a very fierce clash. Fernando Torres will again lead the attack for the Reds alongside with Dirk Kuyt and other scoring midfielders.

As to the Manager’s role, Rafa Benitez knows Spanish football enough, and his Champion’s League experience at the top level will be a major factor.

First Leg

The two will clash at the Bernabeu in Madrid on February 25, 2009. The recent home win of the Spanish giant will play a major psychological role. The home fans are also expecting a lot from their team which last lifted the trophy in 2002. Even though Gerrard is included in the list of Liverpool players, he may not be 100% fit. It will probably rain goals in Madrid. I wouldn’t be surprised if the home team comes out victorious.

My Prediction: 3-2 Real Madrid Wins (It wasn’t raining goal as predicted.  It was in fact a silent night.  But Liverpool comes out victorious with a precious away goal. Actual result: 1-0 for Liverpool)

Second Leg

Anfield will be the venue of the second leg of the last 16 match between Real Madrid and Liverpool. I can already imagine the deafening sound coming from the Liverpool fans. I expect fewer goals, as the Reds will likely dictate the tempo with their choking defense. Raul, Robben and Nistelrooy will make attempts at breaking the defense. But to no avail. Fernando Torres will also make some breakaway attempts only to be spoiled by the Spanish International goalie. In the heat of the game, a defense lapse will make way for a Gerrard penalty, and ultimately, a goal.

My Prediction: 1-0 Liverpool prevails

Liverpool’s away goals will make the difference. Of course, this is just my prediction and Real Madrid is fully capable of turning things around.

Actual Results: It rained goals at Anfield and the visitors were utterly destroyed. Liverpool 4, Real Madrid 0.
