Liverpool vs Chelsea again in Europe! The first encounter will be on April 8, 2009 at Anfield. This is not the first time the two met in Europe in the last five years as they play against each other every year. As a matter of fact, they clashed three times in the knock out stages. And it was not without controversies. Liverpool beat Chelsea in the semis in 2005, and it was a contested goal. A prediction of the results between the two is not easy.
Liverpool made a repeat of their dominance in 2007. But Chelsea found its target last year, edging Liverpool 4-3 in aggregate.
Rafa Benitez, fresh from an energizing contract extension this week, will lead the 2005 Champion against last year’s beaten finalist, Chelsea FC. The Reds came from an inspiring 4-1 victory against league-leader Manchester United a week ago, while Chelsea is in high spirits after consecutive wins under the new Manager, Guus Hiddink. The two clubs are chasing Manchester United in the race for the Premiership title.
So, who’s got the edge? Liverpool or Chelsea?
Zinedane Zidane recently named Steven Gerrard, captain of the Liverpool team, as the best player in the world. Of course, we all know of Gerrard’s importance of the team. It was best shown in the 2005 finals against Milan, when they were down 0-3 at half time, he inspired the team to reverse their misfortunes. The Reds’ captain is lethal at free kicks and penalties. He inspires his teammate to victory. They also have Fernando Torres to power them in front.
If Gerrard is Liverpool, we also have John Terry at Chelsea. But because of last year’s missed penalty kick, I just hope the England Captain regained his confidence. Lampard and Drogba are also there to power the Blues to victory. Drogba is back to his old lethal form, and it’s a warning sign for the opponent.
My prediction – First leg results: – 1-0 for the home team which is Liverpool.
Actual first leg results: Chelsea 3, Liverpool 1. This came as a shock to Liverpool fans. Vanislav Ivanoic provided two goals and the ever-reliable Didier Drogba added 1 despite Torres giving the Reds the first goal of the game. It will be very difficult for the Reds at Stamford Bridge next week.
Second leg results: 1-0 for the home team again! 4-3 penalty shootout, and Chelsea will win it this time.
Actual second leg results: It rained goals all night. Chelsea survived with 4-4. The Blues won on agreggate, 7-5. Hurray for Chelsea!
