England vs Ukraine: Football World Cup 2010 Qualifier

It’s England vs Ukraine in the World Cup 2010 Qualifier on April 1, 2009 at the Wembley Stadium in London. This is an important match for the Fabio Capello and English squad as they attempt to regain lost glory after not being able to qualify for Euro 2008.
Though sitting atop Group 6, with a perfect 4-0-0 standing, and 5 points clear off second running Croatia, Fabio Capello’s England squad is in need of a striker. Emile Heskey, Peter Crouch, and Carlton Cole got injuries. Michael Owen was left out by the manager, leaving only Wayne Rooney and a few inexperienced options at the striker position. But we all know that they got a bunch of scoring midfielders in Frank Lampard, David Beckham and Steven Gerrard.
England hoped to achieve what they had done in 1966, that is, to win the World Cup. The farthest they had gone so far is up to the semi-finals. But first, they have to qualify on their way to the finals in South Africa in 2010. In 2006, Portugal beat them at the quarters. It was Ronaldo, a young player of their league, who ruined their World Cup dreams.
Ukraine, on the other hand, got their proven striker in Andriy Shevchenko. But the former Chelsea (and now back to AC Milan) player could not win games alone. Given the game is in London, the squad from Eastern Europe faces a very tough wall.
I see an England route of Ukraine for this match. Wayne Rooney will score again while Terry, Gerrard and Lampard will provide a solid leadership for the squad. My hunch is a 4-1 massacre in favor of the home team.
But actual result is heartstopping 2-1 victory for England. Thanks to John Terry!
