Nonito Donaire vs Raul Martinez: Preview and Prediction of the Flash and the Furious

Nonito Donaire vs Raul Martinez in Manila will be a go this time at the Araneta Coliseum on April 19, 2009. This is good news for Filipino boxing fans because the fight, dubbed as “The Flash and the Furious” can be seen live in the Philippines. And this is not an ordinary fight as the IBF and IBO flyweight crowns are at stake.
Nonito “The Flash” Donaire (20-1-0), the California-based Filipino champion took the IBF flyweight title with a 5th round knockout of undefeated previously southpaw Vic Darchinyan, on July 7, 2007. That was the highlight of the Filipino boxer’s career, as it was awarded Ring Magazine’s “Upset of the Year” and “Knockout of the Year”.
Two year’s later, not a big name fighter challenged him. Donaire successfully and easily dispatched two other challengers. This time, Raul “The Cobra” Martinez (24-0 with 14 KOs) will hope to make a gallant stand and put up a show against the champion. This is not the first time the two met as they have faced once during their amateur days. The Filipino won on points.
But both knew that the past was behind them now. They have certainly changed and added more firepower in their arsenal. Donaire is confident of winning this fight via knockout. “If one of my punches do land, then it’s over,” said Donaire, who is currently trained by the famed Peñalosa brothers Gerry, Dodie Boy and Jonathan. He has sparred close to 120 rounds for this fight, and is all focused to defend his belt.
My Fight Results Prediction
If that one good punch from Nonito “The Flash” Donaire actually connects to the jaw of Raul “The Cobra” Martinez, then that fight is over. I do expect a tough challenge from Martinez, but it will still end in TKO in the 5th round, in favor of the defending champion.
UPDATE: The fight ended in TKO as earlier predicted, but it was a round earlier. The cobra has no match against the Filipino Flash, as it lost via TKO in the 4th round.
My other boxing results predictions:
Pacquiao vs Hatton
Peñalosa vs Lopez

i believe that the cobra will give problems in the early rounds. he is very agressive and agile with those wild hooks. i believe that donaire shouldnt rush in getting a KO win early. he should stay in the pocket and counter with those pin point accurate punches and utilize the long jab. eventualy those counter punches landed by donaire will add up as the earlier round goes by. martinez will eventually start to crumble in the middle rounds and donaire should start applying the pressure once his counter punching tactics breaks down the aggresiveness of martinez.
donaire is gonna succesfully retain the ibf title impressively by a devastating knock out. however, i dont think viloria will capture the title from solis. viloria is impressive for being a former olympian but that was during the amatuer years. he was not suppose to loose to edgar sosa but he did. solis is too excelent of a fighter to be defeated by a former champ who loss to the unknown. however, i hope im wrong about my prediction for the jr. flyweight bout cuz im pinoy hopefully viloria does win but i doubt it.
Nonito has power and speed to knockout his opponents. His fight against Concepcion is a big test for him whether he can still bring his power in heavier weight class… Godluck Nonito!!!
Good luck…
