Pacquiao vs Hatton: The Hours After The Disappointing Fight

We all know the results of the Pacquiao vs Hatton fight by this time, that the Pacman demolished the Hitman in two rounds. It is not difficult to find video replays as it was a very brief fight. Yeah, easy two rounds for the pound-for-pound king against the 140-lb brawler from Manchester, England. Disappointing in a sense that many thought they were not getting their money’s worth.

“What a waste of money!”. Those thousands of Britons who flocked to MGM must have said that when they saw their local hero lying unconscious on the canvass. I bet they probably lost more in the casinos than what their tickets’ worth.

“What a waste of money!” These are also the words of some of those who watched the fight on large screens and who paid extra bucks for payperview here in the Philippines. I, too, would have been one of them. At P700-P1,000 bucks with free food and drinks, I’d stuff myself and hang around longer just to get my money’s worth.

My prediction was a KO in 5 rounds as I don’t want to underestimate the Mancurian Hitman. I even thought that Roach’s 3-round prediction was exaggerated. I saw a clip of Ricky’s fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr., which gave me a reason to believe that he should have given an exciting fight, one that could last five rounds. (But still ends with a KO)

But well, who can blame Manny if Ricky opened up himself for a right hook? We can’t blame Mayweather Sr. either. The loud-mouthed trainer should be silenced by now after his ward was put to sleep. He should pack his bag to go back to his son’s side. Even if he’s no longer training Junior, he has all the right to declare, “That’s my son, the former pound-for-pound king”. Ricky was back to his old bad habits in the ring. It was a flaw magnified by that first loss to Floyd, and further cemented by the short bout with Manny.

Now what about the fans?

Tears for Ricky. Family and close friends urged the fighter to hang up his gloves for good. He has a kid and a lovely girlfriend. It was really an awful sight to see him flattened in the ring. Much worse, because it happened in the second round!

I don’t know who the British folks look up to next time. I think they should join the Pacmania as they had seen for themselves the best boxer in the world today. Or maybe, flock around Amir Khan as their future boxing hero.

For the Pacquiao fans, let’s go back to our old selves again. We already lost three comrades who died of heart attack while watching the fight. It will take many months before we see Manny fight again.

What’s Next for Manny?

Pacquiao vs Mayweather may be another megafight, though Bob Arum prefers a Pacquiao vs Cotto match before the year ends. Whoever our hero faces, let us rally behind him.

I hope Manny will be busy doing charitable works while he is away from boxing. May he stay away from politics this time but gird himself with knowledge and experience for his future political ambitions. Maybe he can obtain some University-accredited special sessions on political science and/or public administration. Future doesn’t mean 2010. Perhaps an election after that, and in an administrative capacity (e.g. Mayor of Gensan). May he stay away from gambling, too.
