Most badminton enthusiasts in the Philippines do not know anything about what is happening in the sport outside the country. Do you know that the Philippines sent a team to join the 2009 Sudirman Cup? They are showing good results in the Sudirman Cup. 3-1 in their group. To be honest, we do not even know what is happening within our nation’s badminton community.
What is the Sudirman Cup? Here’s the Wikipedia entry:
Sudirman Cup is the world mixed team badminton championship which takes place every two years. There are five matches in every round: men and women’s singles, men and women’s doubles and mixed doubles. The Cup is named after Dick Sudirman, a former Indonesian badminton player and the founder of the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI). The first Sudirman Cup tournament took place in Bung Karno Stadium, Central Jakarta, Indonesia on May 24-May 29, 1989.
There is no prize money in Sudirman Cup; players play for their respective countries and to earn BWF world ranking points and national prestige.
The 2009 edition is held in Guangzhou, China from May 10-17, 2009. The teams are bracketed according to their past performances. Normally, only those in the Bracket 1A have the chance of bringing the trophy. This is the 11th edition of the event, and Team China garnered 6 of the past trophies, while Indonesia and Korea shared two each.
What about the Philippine Badminton Team?
The Philippines was able to send a team by virtue of its ranking and, certainly, its performance in the past years. This is probably the first time in two decades. That I do not know. We’re in Group 4A along with Turkey, South Africa, Luxembourg and Switzerland. As of today, we won 4-1 against South Africa, but bowed 4-1 against the Swiss team. Not bad a performance. To be promoted, the team has to top Group 4. To reach Group 1 is a long way to go. Here is the list of our players:

2. Babad, Andrei
3. Estanislao, Ronel

I think only the Asuncion siblings here are the veterans while the rest are on their teens, or barely out of their teens. These young shuttlers can take the breath out of us if we decide to take any of them in a singles match-up. I dare not challenge even the youngest of them.
But for us enthusiasts, who have no chance of joining tourneys locally and internationally, may we rally behind our country’s top players and may they, too, improve their international rankings.

You did not mention if game can be seen in live TV?
goo enough!..
I knew about this and i even watch the livescore when philipppines was battling for 3rd place. It was a very crucial match as the first two matches of singles bowed down and we came back with the last three matches of doubles to win 3rd place. Bravo and Congratulations to our Philippine Team. We have a very bright future since our reps poca and gelita are only 13 and 14 y/o olds…imagine that they are already our TOP players in the women’s division beating our senior players….
the kids are really amazing! may they bring more glory for RP badminton.
hahaha..yes. they are amazing, but they’re very tall for their age. i saw them both playing for doubles in open category in the recently concluded Manila Polo club…man!!,..they’re really very good for their age. I can’t probably even score 10 points in a single match with anyone of them. Gelita has won all her palarong pambansa starting from grade 5 until now.. She was just a first year HS beating all secondary girls hahaha…i’m sure she will be a good particpant in the near future for the World Junior Championship…Go Philippines Team!!!
nealvalmi, let’s see how they fare in the Philippine open. lapit na yon.
it would be great if the National Badminton Association could give detailed information about all of the tournaments held on the national level as well as all of those held abroad with Philippine participation…
what kind of detailed info are you referring to? check below info if this will help. There are other records on the net aside from this.
http://www.tournamentsoftware.com/sport/tournament.aspx?id=103BE201-7C89-47DF-BFAD-D6074352AC11
with abroad tournament with philippine particpation. you can just search the player name or iD and it will show you all the tournaments that the player/s has joined.
Hopefully these kids will get all the support they need to bring glory to the country. For added info, Gelita, Poca and the rest of the Girls team won the bronze a last month in Sri Lanka for the Asia youth badminton championship then repeated them same feat with the boys team 2 weeks ago in Tokyo Asia Junior exchange games for which they brought home bronze. This was rarely been covered on the news but being acquainted with these kids, they are sure proud to wear the flag on their chest…
i’ve followed these kids in a local magazine many months ago. they’re a great bunch!

Parang ikaw lang, di mo nga alam ang spelling ng ‘marunong’. Your crab mentality is over-flowing, if you don’t have anything good to say to your fellows just keep your mouth shut. Your such a shame to the mankind!
