What? USA beats Spain in soccer? This is true my football fan friends. The US team stunned the top-ranked Spain 2-0 advancing to the finals of the Confederations Cup. Jozy Altidore and Clint Dempsey provided the goals.

The victory of the Americans is really not expected in the football world. Their chances are slim. If we think of Spain, Real Madrid and Barcelona come to mind. And when we think of USA, they are usually associated with the ruggedly modified brawl called American football, and/or the high-flying, gravity-defying basketball.

The Spanish team is not without its top players – Iker Casillas, Fernando Torres, David Villa, Xabi Alonso, Cesc Fabregas. For the Americans, other than Tim Howard and Landon Donovan, I don’t know the others.

“I can’t explain it any more than you can,” U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard said. “Sports is funny sometimes, but when you put your mind to something, you can achieve it.” (as quoted at ESPN)

Spain outshot the US side 22-9. But Howard, ex-goalie of Manchester United, made lots of wonderful saves, just like he did in the many wonderful past performances of his team.

The US soccer team will face either Brazil or South Africa in the finals. Who knows if they beat Brazil again the second time around. It would be a much sweeter victory.
