The 2009/2010 UEFA Champions League season is here again, and UEFA has just released the results of the draw for the group stages. Familiar teams are once again scattered in the eight groups. And we have new names around, unheard of by this fan coming from the Far East. Here is the group stage draw result:

Defending Champion Barcelona is grouped with Inter Milan at Group F. We knew that these two teams are “friends” as they swapped their best strikers in Ibrahimovic and Eto’o. Also, Inter Manager Jose Mourinho used to work at the Spanish Giant as translator and assistant manager. During his stint with Chelsea, his relationship with the Barca fans had soured a bit. These two should not have any problems progressing to round of 16, but as who will emerge on top will not matter. However, they will face the Champions of Russia and Ukraine. I hope the travel and cold weather will not be a hindrance. Barcelona vs Inter Milan at the group stages would be fun to watch.

Runner-up Manchester United is grouped with CSKA Moscow, Turkish Champion Besiktas and Bundesliga Leader Wolfsburg. It will be tough for the later two although they could wish to win at their home turf. Manchester United will once again be a favorite to reach the finals. Manchester United vs CSKA Moscow will surely delight the fans even at the group stages.

As for the other groups, I still think the big clubs will progress. Maybe those at Group G have equal chances of progressing. Sevilla and Rangers do not have that strong performance lately.
