The world of football will be watching the qualifying match of Argentina vs Uruguay for a finals berth at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Game is at 18:00 ET today, October 14. This is one game we football fans from the Far East should watch too. Both are fighting for the last automatic qualifying place. Can you imagine a Messi-less world cup? What is your match results prediction?

Argentina

Argentina is currently at fourth place yet it is in the brink of elimination if it fails to win against the 5th place Uruguay. Only a point separates the two. If Argentina falls to fifth, it has to undergo a more arduous process of going to play-offs. Brazil, Paraguay and Chile, the top three teams, already qualified.

What is a World Cup without Argentina? That country may even declare a national day of mourning if it fails to qualify. After many problems with the coaching, they surprisingly hired the legendary player, Diego Maradona, and put him on the reins of the national team. Maradona is on his knees many times already, seeking miracles after miracles, and praying that they would qualify. It is such a heavy burden for him.

They have Lionel Messi, one of the best football players in the world today. They have Veron, Mascherano and Tevez. The later two are strutting their wares in England and wrecking havoc on their opponents. In effect, they really have outstanding players on their side. So what is with the recent slump? Should they replace Maradona for a more experienced coach?

Uruguay

The Uruguay national team has it own history to boast – two FIFA World Cup trophies and two Olympic Golds. But that is in the past. The last four World Cup finals, they only managed to qualify once. And I do not know of anyone in their present line-up. Sorry, Uruguay fans!

Coach Oscar Washington Tabarez is very hopeful. He has called on “all of Uruguay” to play the World Cup qualifier against Argentina. He said (as quoted from soccernet) “I want all of Uruguay to play this match. I want all Uruguayans to cheer the team and they will surely feel this team will do their best for our people. I want to tell fans they have to trust in this team because we’ll reply in the best way.”

Wow! This will add more pressure to the Argentine side.

Trivia

Uruguay and Argentina hold the record for the most international matches played between two countries. The two teams have faced each other 161 times since 1901. The first match against Argentina was the first official international match to be played outside the United Kingdom and Ireland. (source: Wikipedia)

Match Results Prediction

Palermo was the hero in the last game against Peru. But despite having a very strong squad, the Argentine team seems to lack the potency of burying their opponents. In this Argentina vs Uruguay match, a 1-0 win for Maradona’s squad is my prediction for the game.

Actual results: Maradona and his Argentina squad made it! What a goal from Mario Bolatti! The final results is 1-0, just as I predicted. Uruguay will go into the play-off either against Honduras or Costa Rica.
