Lionel Messi: 2009 FIFA World Player of the Player
Posted by cebloggerDec 23
At last, Lionel Messi has won the FIFA World Player of the Year after being the runner-up in the last two years to Cristiano Ronald and Kaka. Now he beat the two by wide margins. The 22-year old Messi’s other achievements this year include the Ballon D’Or as the best player in Europe and trophies with Barcelona in Champions’ League, Club World Cup and in the La Liga.

All the accolades are from his exemplary performance at club level. What about for Argentina? He was on the team that won the gold in the 2008 Olympics. Yet under the legendary Diego Maradona as coach of the national team, Messi did not show much contribution. How come?
Maradona has labeled Messi his ‘successor’ on the field, but the young player has already surpassed the legend in terms of honors at the club level. Maybe it is the pressure. Or it could be the style of the coach. The lingering question is: Can Messi inspire the Argentine team for a World Cup title in South Africa next year? Can he surpass Maradona’s record at country level? At 22, Messi can undoubtedly be better than everyone else.
Next time you watch a football game of Barcelona or Argentina, look out for Lionel Messi, one of the world’s best football players. He plays so beautifully that don’t want to blink when he has the ball.
