I haven’t had the chance to follow the badminton tournaments lately. Even the local tourneys I used to join, I skip them for one reason or another. But a lunchtime conversation with a friend, in which he was very animated describing the badminton game he watched on TV, sparked my curiosity.

I know the days of the Kennievic and Kennie are gone already. It’s the teenagers that ruled the badminton scene these days. And our country’s best young shuttlers entered the 2011 BWF World Junior Championship held in Taipei, Taiwan.

I scanned the news for the results. There was a write-up that they joined but no news on the outcome. So I searched further. Though the tournament is still ongoing, here is the Philippine badminton team results:

Women’s Single

Janelle Glorianne De Vera vs Emily Westwood (England) – 6-21, 14-21
Malvinne Anne Venice Alcala vs Sonia Su Ya Cheah (Malaysia) 19-21, 22-20, 9-21

Men’s Single

Michael Kevin Cudiamat vs Anatoliy Yartsev (Russia) 15-21, 6-21
Philip Joper Escueta vs Tolga Oszoy (Turkey) 23-21, 21-8
Philip Joper Escueta vs K. Shrikanth (India) 9-21, 9-21

Mixed Doubles

Michael Kevin Cudiamat/Janelle Glorianne De Vera vs Asraf B Ishal Muhd/Wei Han Tan (Singapore) 8-21, 16-21

Men’s Doubles

Carlos Antonie Cayanan/Theodore Christopher Matt Co vs Cholprasertsuk Kritti/Tovannakasem Samatcha (Thailand) 8-21, 19-21

Philippine Badminton Players to Watch

16 year old Malvinne Anne Alcala, fresh from capturing the U-19 and ladies Open title in the recent VP Binay Grand Prix Badminton Open Championships-PBaRS fourth leg, gave the 5th seeded Malaysian, Su Ya Cheah, a scare before bowing out in the third set of their opening match.

Philip Joper Escueta, U-19 winner in the recent VP Binay Grand Prix Badminton open, beat a Turkish foe before succumbing to India’s K. Shrikanth in the third round.

Despite going home without capturing a medal, our young Philippine players will surely cherish the experience and make them better players in the future tournaments. Alcala and Escueta are two young and exciting badminton players to watch out.

I am going back to play badminton in 2011. I have already done so in December. So far, my knees didn’t complain. It might did but unlike before, it wasn’t as painful. I could still walk and climb the office stairs. No need for paracetamol or some aspirin. But I can’t resist applying the omega pain killer on my tired muscles the night after the game.

I noticed the dwindling number of badminton enthusiasts. The courts were not as jampacked as before. I heard that lots of badminton courts already locked up. Some of my playing buddies shifted to running. Yeah, I always let them run on the court when they’re on the opposite side. Now they run without their rackets – 5k, and some even 21k. The Yonex/Mizuno became Adidas and/or Nike once more.

Gone also are the sexy and hot badminton players who used to entice men to join the game. If you played sometime in 2004-2006, you’ll surely know what I mean. Even the amateurs suddenly became experts. And the experts became amateurs when playing at the back, behind the short-skirted ladies. Oh, well that was badminton before.

But hey, I found a video in you tube of a Philippine celebrity playing badminton – hot and sexy badminton game. Turn on your audio please. But don’t turn on the perv side in you.

Maybe, just maybe, if these kind of girls go back playing again at the courts where I play, I could probably persuade my boss to include the weekly badminton games in our 2011 budget.

I remember full well the days leading to the CPA board exam 14 years ago. My schedule was so tight at study that I did not have any more time for myself. Accounting subjects here, accounting subjects there.

But there was one activity that I could not resist: Badminton on Saturday mornings. Those days were supposed to be the schedule of our Law review but I exchanged that for sweat at the badminton court. “I can read the law books later” I said to myself. Sweat now, study later.

It was fun. My shirt was wet everytime I entered the review with only a few minutes to go before break time. And I really felt good, even bragging to reviewmates that I still have time for badminton.

Examination days came and I felt relaxed. I was confident of hurdling the first subjects on the first three days of the exam. Law and taxation was scheduled on the last day. Remember, I exchanged badminton for the Law review. I was so nervous when I read the test questionnaires. A lot of the questions were discussed during that time when I skipped the review. “Oh boy! I am doomed” I said with both my palms in my forehead. Regrets, regrets, regrets. I just closed my eyes and uttered a prayer. I asked for forgiveness; for skipping the review and for playing badminton instead.

When the CPA board exam results were released a few days later, I felt relieved when I saw my name in the list. “Thank you, LORD” I shouted with glee.

Lessons learned? Don’t let sports addiction waylaid you in your studies. Time management is very important. Keep your focus.

Sudirman Cup is the world mixed team badminton championship which takes place every two years. There are five matches in every round: men and women’s singles, men and women’s doubles and mixed doubles. The Cup is named after Dick Sudirman, a former Indonesian badminton player and the founder of the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI). The first Sudirman Cup tournament took place in Bung Karno Stadium, Central Jakarta, Indonesia on May 24-May 29, 1989.

There is no prize money in Sudirman Cup; players play for their respective countries and to earn BWF world ranking points and national prestige.

The 2009 edition is held in Guangzhou, China from May 10-17, 2009. The teams are bracketed according to their past performances. Normally, only those in the Bracket 1A have the chance of bringing the trophy. This is the 11th edition of the event, and Team China garnered 6 of the past trophies, while Indonesia and Korea shared two each.

What about the Philippine Badminton Team?

The Philippines was able to send a team by virtue of its ranking and, certainly, its performance in the past years. This is probably the first time in two decades. That I do not know. We’re in Group 4A along with Turkey, South Africa, Luxembourg and Switzerland. As of today, we won 4-1 against South Africa, but bowed 4-1 against the Swiss team. Not bad a performance. To be promoted, the team has to top Group 4. To reach Group 1 is a long way to go. Here is the list of our players:

1. Asuncion, Kennevic
2. Babad, Andrei

I think only the Asuncion siblings here are the veterans while the rest are on their teens, or barely out of their teens. These young shuttlers can take the breath out of us if we decide to take any of them in a singles match-up. I dare not challenge even the youngest of them.

But for us enthusiasts, who have no chance of joining tourneys locally and internationally, may we rally behind our country’s top players and may they, too, improve their international rankings.
