Mark McGwire, the Major League baseball player who hit 70 home runs in 1998 with the St. Louis Cardinals, now admits that he used steroids and performance-enhancing drugs. When this sports scandal first broke out many years ago, he denied any wrongdoing.

This is an excerpt to what he said in a statement released to AP on Monday:

I never knew when, but I always knew this day would come. It’s time for me to talk about the past and to confirm what people have suspected. I used steroids during my playing career and I apologize. I remember trying steroids very briefly in the 1989/1990 off season and then after I was injured in 1993, I used steroids again. I used them on occasion throughout the ’90s, including during the 1998 season.

I wish I had never touched steroids. It was foolish and it was a mistake. I truly apologize. Looking back, I wish I had never played during the steroid era.

Mark McGwire became the second major baseball star player this year to admit using illegal steroids. In February, the New York Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez also made admissions. Both are, coincidentally, tied on the home-run list.

High-profile athletes are now coming forward after years of silence. They left us in awe during their prime, breaking records after records. And when accused, they just remain silent. This leaves us to ask, why only now? Or should we admire them for their courage to come out? It ain’t easy when you are famous.

No wonder why some people have reasons to suspect over-achieving athletes.
