Pacquiao vs Mosley this coming Saturday May 7, 2011 (May 8 in the Philippines) will be the biggest boxing fight of the world this 2011. Boxing experts, fans and non-fans alike have various analysis and predictions leading to this fight. Who do you think will come out victorious?

My wife still thinks that Pacquiao will lose while my friends said that their idol will kill Mosley. Before we jump into conclusion riding on our biases, let’s see who these fighters are.

Sugar Shane Mosley

If this fight happened a decade ago, Sugar Shane Mosley (46-6-1-1) would have been the overwhelming favorite. In 2001, he was 38-0 and already a two-division title holder. His most famous win was against Oscar de la Hoya, wherein he took the WBA Welterweight title.

He successfully defended the Welterweight title thrice before succumbing to a superior Vernon Forrest. That was his first loss. His second was in a rematch six months later. He bounced back in 2003 and took the Light Middleweight belt from De La Hoya, whom he defeated earlier in a split decision. But the win was controversial as reports involved him in the notorious BALCO scandal.

What he won that year, he lost in the next to Winky Wright. The rematch was also not in Mosley’s favor as he lost to a majority decision.

In 2009, despite being 37 years old and an underdog against the rising Antonio Margarito, Mosley took the Mexican-American to school and snatched his Welterweight belt via TKO. It was a career resurrection of sort for the Pomona, California boxer.

In 2010, Mosley fought the undefeated loudmouthed Floyd Mayweather Jr., in the latter’s second fight after a retirement comeback. Though it was a non-title bout, it was nevertheless a sell-out crowd at the MGM Grand. Mosley asserted his power in the first two rounds, even stunning the younger boxer with strong blows. The weariness of a 38 year old showed off, in the latter rounds when the younger and quicker former pound-for-pound king Mayweather toyed with the aging former Champion. It was a lopsided unanimous decision win for Mayweather. Reports said that this fight was first arranged in 1999 but did not push through many times.

Manny Pacquiao

Emmanuel ‘Manny’ Pacquiao (52-3-2) is an eight-division world champion, the first boxer in history to win ten world titles, the first to win in eight weight divisions and the first to win the lineal championship in four different weight classes. He is currently Ring Magazine’s no.1 Pound-for-pound boxer. The Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) also named him as “Fighter of the Decade” for the 2000′s. He is also a three-time The Ring and BWAA “Fighter of the Year”, winning the award in 2006, 2008, and 2009.

Manny Pacquiao had risen to stardom starting in that June 2001 bout with the South African IBF SuperBantamweight World Champion Ledwaba at the MGM Grand. The world first saw how exciting Pacquiao fights. In 2002, he came as a replacement challenger to the Ring Featherweight title of Marco Antonio Barrera. He knocked out the Mexican legend at the 11th round, shocking the boxing world. Mexican boxing legend fell one after another. Barrera was beaten in a rematch. Juan Manuel Marquez drew once and lost the last one. He is eagerly anticipating a third bout, but was not yet granted with the reqest. Erik Morales was the last fighter who won against Pacquaio. The Filipino avenged his loss in the 2nd and 3rd fight in their famous trilogy.

Pacquiao also fought Oscar de la Hoya at a catchweight in 2008. The bigger and stronger American looked like a lame boxer as he quit before the ninth round started. It was billed as ‘The Dream Match’ but it obviously became a nightmare for the other whose pretty face (and ego) was badly bruised.

After De La Hoya, Pacquiao also demolished British hero Ricky Hatton in two rounds. Then other bigger and stronger boxers fell one by one – Cotto, Clottey and Margarito. The big names are already cleared except for Floyd Mayweather Jr and Sugar Shane Mosley. Floyd set too many conditions, like drug testing and purse share. Mosley is the next big name.

Pacquiao vs Mosley Preview and Results Prediction

Mosley will come out strong in the early rounds, just like what he did to Mayweather and Margarito. The sense for urgency is necessary. He knows that Pacquiao is hittable and often plays around with the crowd, even exposing some openings. That is where Mosley has to give all his best, even just for the early rounds. His speed and stamina may no longer be there so if Pacquiao remain standing after three rounds, it will all be trouble for him.

Pacquiao knows the strength of the opposition. He studies them, and even absorbed some of their punches to test their fist power. He knows Mosley had lost to only a few people, but none had knocked him out, (though Vernon Forrest had the honors of knocking Mosley down first). One thing that distinguishes Pacquiao from the rest is that, the Filipino fighter has in his arsenal plenty of offensive threats – speed, power, strong combinations, and even the awkward shots can stagger the opponent.

If this fight happened in 2008 or earlier, Paquiao would have been the underdog and fans would have feared for his life. But after so many skirmishes at top level, beating odds one after another, Pacquiao has become the favorite this 2011. There has been so many upsets in the past few weeks though, but this one will not be one of them. Mosley will not retire triumphant, but at least there will be lots of money in his wallet.

My prediction is that Pacquiao will knock out Mosley in round 8. I hope Mosley will not do a Clottey-like defensive game just to remain standing and avoid brutal punishment.

Real Madrid drew it first game away at Real Mallorca. This is already the regular season and Mourinho and his boys must perform well after all the hype in the pre-season. Below is the video highlights (replay) I found on YouTube.

From the looks of it, Madrid should have scored at least three. But they’re pretty, pretty wasteful on those attempts that could have been easily converted into goals. The opponents must be lucky. And unlucky for Ronaldo too, as he will be out for weeks due to injury sustained in that game.

Pacquiao vs Clottey it is after the chicken Mayweather and others spoiled the megafight that could have changed the destiny of boxing. Drug-testing schedule was the issue raised. But it was obvious that someone was trying to duck the other. So, let us all move on. But don’t be quick to declare that in your fight results prediction, Pacquiao is a sure winner in a single round. Read on.

The Pacquiao – Clottey fight will take place on March 13, 2010 (March 14 in the Philippines) at the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas. HBO will once again televise it on PPV. Nobody, I suppose, would challenge that schedule on TV. Good thing the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs Shane Mosley fight is scheduled on May, enough for the boxing fans to recoup what they will have to spend for the Pacquiao fight.

Should we say that it is a walk in the park for Manny? Or can Clottey, the hero of Ghana, spoil the fun and break Manny and Filipino boxing fans to tears? Clottey is no mean beast as he was beaten by Cotto and Margarito. But he is no easy prey either, as he holds a record of 35-3 with 20 knockouts and has notable wins against Zab Judah and Diego Corrales. Clottey declares that no southpaw has ever beaten him, and he has a formula in beating Pacquiao.

Joshua Clottey is a tough guy and he has an almost impenetrable defense. He almost beat Cotto, and in fact, many thought he won that fight. He lost a decision to Margarito. And if we imagine that bloody Margarito-Cotto fight, we can affirm that he’s tough indeed.

Manny Pacquiao, as we all know, is the hottest boxer in the planet today. He demolished high-profile fighters in Barrera, Marquez, Morales, Dela Hoya, Hatton, and recently, Miguel Cotto. Fans actually wanted him to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. It would have been the fight of the decade. But negotiations failed because of a drug issue that many felt, was a non-issue in the first place. Ok, enough of the blame game. The postponement could actually put more hype on the mega-fight should Pacquiao and Mayweather hurdle their assignments, then decide to fight later on.

Fight Result Predictions

My wife once again predicts a Pacquiao loss. But since I am the blogger here, I say otherwise. I stated in the intro that let us not predict and easy win for Manny. No, not in one or two rounds because Clottey is tough and will most probably take the counterpunching position. Pacquiao’s power and quickness are going to be the key to victory. Manny will eventually wear down Clottey in 6 rounds, and puts the exclamation point before the bell rings. Pacquiao will KO Clottey in 6.

Results Update

Jose Luis Castillo quits in round 4 against Alfonso Gomez. Diaz could not fight enough as he succumbed to Soto’s power. Diaz lost by UD.

In the Manny Pacquiao vs Joshua Clottey fight, the Filipino was like hitting some punching bags. Clottey just hid with his hands covering his face. Pacquiao threw punches left, right, up and down. Official results: Manny won by unanimous decision.

Pacquiao vs Cotto boxing fight is now official. The two sluggers will meet for the first time at MGM Grand in Las Vegas on November 14, 2009. This will be the biggest boxing fight this fall and will be available at HBO pay-per-view. Bob Arum, the boss at Top Rank who handles both fighters, announced this deal on Monday.

Cotto (34-1, 27 KOs) is the titleholder at 147 pounds while Pacquiao is the 140-pound junior welterweight champion. Though it was rumored that Pacquiao wanted the fight at 143 lbs, while Cotto refused, they ultimately agreed on a 145-pound maximum weight.

The two are the most popular boxers today shadowing even that of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. and/or Shane Mosley. Pacquiao, a title holder in six weight divisions, enjoys a hero/celebrity-like status in the Philippines. Cotto, on the other hand, is Puerto Rico’s most popular boxer today.

The money side of the deal hasn’t been announced yet. Pacquiao is expected to get the bigger pie after he demolished Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton is brutal yet exciting fashion fashion.

I am sure that this is the most anticipated fight of the year. After Cotto disposed of Clottey, and after Mayweather Jr vs Marquez announced their fight, we all know who Pacquiao’s next opponent is. Pacquiao vs Cotto, we’d all be watching that out.

Today, May 11, 2009 is Manny Pacquiao Day! President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has proclaimed May 11 as a special National Day of Celebration in honor of Pacquiao, the Pambansang Kamao (National Fist).

Some people were actually waiting for a non-working Holiday proclamation. But why didn’t the powers in the Palace declared that? That would have been a plus to the holiday-loving masses.

Manny Pacquiao was named Ambassador for peace and understanding by President Arroyo. Then our beloved Justice Secretary appointed him as “special assistant to the secretary of the Department of Justice on intelligence matters”.

“In the interest of public service and with the provision of existing law, Master Sergeant Emmanuel Pacquiao has been hereby designated as special assistant to the secretary of the Department of Justice in intelligence matters,” the Department Order 344 said, as quoted from the PDI. See article here.

Why Master Sergeant only and not a General? Can’t they do that? It would be more appropriate and befitting our National Fist. “General Manny Pacquiao KOs Floyd Mayweather Jr.” I would love to read that in the headlines.

Manchester United vs Barcelona 2011 UEFA Champions League Finals

It’s Manchester United vs Barcelona (Barca) in the 2009 UEFA Champions League Finals in Rome on May 27, 2009! Barca came off with a thrilling late goal to level the score at Stamford Bridge a few hours ago. With the away goal after a scoreless draw at Camp Nou a week ago, Barca progressed to the finals.

The other night, Manchester United, the 2008 Champions League champions, thrashed Arsenal 3-1 to progress again to the Finals. If they win again in Rome, they will be the first team to win the title back-to-back in the UEFA Champions League Era. This will be history worth cherishing for Cristiano Ronaldo, Sir Alex Ferguson, and of course, the whole United team and the fans.

My prediction for a repeat of the Chelsea-Manchester United finals did not materialize. I really felt bad for Chelsea. This is their fourth semi-final defeat in six seasons. They had it within their grasp when Michael Essien scored the first goal. But the wily Iniesta sneaked in and scored in the 93rd minute. He had Lionel Messi to thank for. It’s the end of the road for Guus Hiddink’s side. No more redemption for Terry and Drogba. Not this year!

Can Manchester United repulse Barca in its chase for more glory? Ronaldo and Rooney vs Eto’o, Henry and Messi. These two teams practically have the world’s best football players today. Both can score goals as plenty as they like. Fluid football and great plays are what we are to expect in the Finals in Rome.

Who is your bet to win the trophy? The 2008 Champions vs the 2006 Champions. Watch Manchester United vs Barcelona Live on May 27, 2009 at the Stadio Olimpico.

We all know the results of the Pacquiao vs Hatton fight by this time, that the Pacman demolished the Hitman in two rounds. It is not difficult to find video replays as it was a very brief fight. Yeah, easy two rounds for the pound-for-pound king against the 140-lb brawler from Manchester, England. Disappointing in a sense that many thought they were not getting their money’s worth.

“What a waste of money!”. Those thousands of Britons who flocked to MGM must have said that when they saw their local hero lying unconscious on the canvass. I bet they probably lost more in the casinos than what their tickets’ worth.

“What a waste of money!” These are also the words of some of those who watched the fight on large screens and who paid extra bucks for payperview here in the Philippines. I, too, would have been one of them. At P700-P1,000 bucks with free food and drinks, I’d stuff myself and hang around longer just to get my money’s worth.

My prediction was a KO in 5 rounds as I don’t want to underestimate the Mancurian Hitman. I even thought that Roach’s 3-round prediction was exaggerated. I saw a clip of Ricky’s fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr., which gave me a reason to believe that he should have given an exciting fight, one that could last five rounds. (But still ends with a KO)

But well, who can blame Manny if Ricky opened up himself for a right hook? We can’t blame Mayweather Sr. either. The loud-mouthed trainer should be silenced by now after his ward was put to sleep. He should pack his bag to go back to his son’s side. Even if he’s no longer training Junior, he has all the right to declare, “That’s my son, the former pound-for-pound king”. Ricky was back to his old bad habits in the ring. It was a flaw magnified by that first loss to Floyd, and further cemented by the short bout with Manny.

Now what about the fans?

Tears for Ricky. Family and close friends urged the fighter to hang up his gloves for good. He has a kid and a lovely girlfriend. It was really an awful sight to see him flattened in the ring. Much worse, because it happened in the second round!

I don’t know who the British folks look up to next time. I think they should join the Pacmania as they had seen for themselves the best boxer in the world today. Or maybe, flock around Amir Khan as their future boxing hero.

For the Pacquiao fans, let’s go back to our old selves again. We already lost three comrades who died of heart attack while watching the fight. It will take many months before we see Manny fight again.

What’s Next for Manny?

Pacquiao vs Mayweather may be another megafight, though Bob Arum prefers a Pacquiao vs Cotto match before the year ends. Whoever our hero faces, let us rally behind him.

I hope Manny will be busy doing charitable works while he is away from boxing. May he stay away from politics this time but gird himself with knowledge and experience for his future political ambitions. Maybe he can obtain some University-accredited special sessions on political science and/or public administration. Future doesn’t mean 2010. Perhaps an election after that, and in an administrative capacity (e.g. Mayor of Gensan). May he stay away from gambling, too.

Chelsea vs Everton in the FA Cup Final at Wembley on May 30! Who will win? I got my Chelsea vs Manchester United prediction half correct. I felt sorry for the Red Devils. But what can we do when you sit out your best players?

I expected Ronaldo and Rooney to inflict the damage. But they were rested. The young guys were given the opportunity to start and shine on their own. They were given the load to carry Manchester United to a quintuple. But Everton’s Tim Howard, United’s ex-goal keeper, made all the difference as he stopped the penalty shots of Berbatov and Ferdinand, after the game ended 0-0 at regulation. So Louis Saha was right after all, when he predicted a win for the Toffees.

Chelsea, on the other hand, won as I expected of them. The rejuvenated Didier Drogba dashed the hopes of Arsenal for a silverware this season. The Blues won 2-1.

Chelsea vs Everton, what’s your team of choice?

Obviously, my team of choice is Chelsea. Chelsea all the way! With Lampard, Terry and Drogba on board, Everton has a very slim chance of winning the FA Cup. But as the saying goes, “the ball is round”, so we’ll never be sure till the last whistle is blown. My prediction is a 3-1 victory for Chelsea.

Chelsea vs Juventus is another of the Italy – England match-ups of the first leg of the 2009 UEFA Champions league. My match results prediction of their encounter is somewhat tainted with bias as I am a Chelsea fan. And I am not a fan of Claudio Raniere, the manager who used to lead the British club to some heights in 2004, and was replaced by Jose Mourinho, because he did not win a title. A semis in the 2004 edition and a runner up finish at Barclay’s were not enough to satisfy Roman Abramovich, the new Chelsea owner at that time.

So we expect Juventus to rally behind their coach and exact revenge on his former club. The old lady of Italian football is not really a weak team. They are currently in second place behind Mourinho’s Internazionale. They used to lord the Italian Serie A before they were penalized for game-fixing. They were thrown into the dungeons of the second-tier league but were able to fight back for their place at the top flight. Now they are back in fighting form.

And what do we expect from Chelsea who has now its third manager since last year’s finals? Guus Hiddink could be their savior. Or could it be the resurrected Anelka who is currently the premier league’s leading scorer? The old guards of the Blues are still there. Maybe they’re not as enthusiastic as we’ve seen before. John Terry, Frank Lampard, Deco, Didier Drogba, Andrei Schevchenko, Michael Ballack and other great players makes Chelsea a very strong force to reckon with.

First Leg

The two will clash at the Stamford Bridge on February 25, 2009. I expect a thrashing for the visiting team. With Chelsea coming off from a win away over Aston Villa this evening of Hiddink’s club debut, they’re fired up to toast their opponent come Wednesday.

My Prediction: 2-0 Chelsea wins (Actual result: 1-0 win by Chelsea on a Drogba goal. It could have been more)

Second Leg

Chelsea will travel to Turin on March 10 and face Italy’s most successful club. Honestly, I am not confident of the premiership side’s away chances. Juve is strong in its own backyard, and held by its super goalie, Gianluigi Buffon.

My Prediction: Juve win 2-0.

So my prediction for their match will result to a penalty shoot-out. Though Juve has the world’s best goalie, Peter Cech of Chelsea is not that far behind. John Terry will redeem himself and carry his team to victory and proceed to the quarterfinals.

Actual result: Chelsea 2 – Juventus 2. Chelsea progressed winning 3-2 in aggregate.

Luiz Felipe Scolari, the world cup-winning Brazilian football coach, had been sacked by Chelsea 2 days ago after a dismal team performance at the Premier League. Despite the estimated £6m per annum three-year contract of the Brazilian, who just spent seven months in the Stamford Bridge, he was shown the exit door. Therefore, he could collect £15M compensation. How’s that for being fired!
From a league-leader to a fourth-placer midway in the season, the situation did not sit well with the billionaire Russian owner and the fans. As I see it, everything is still within striking distance. But the owner doesn’t have that patience.

I am a Chelsea fan starting that time when Jose Mourinho began managing the team. He was brought in to replace Claudio Raniere despite the team’s second place finish in the Premier League, and a semifinals appearance at the Champion’s league. And when Mourinho was not able to bring in the most coveted club cup in Europe, he too was sacked. The failure overshadowed his feat of handing the Club its first trophy in 50 years, and many other silverwares. He left £20M richer. Thanks to his contract.

Then came Avram Grant. His spiel was short and was not even liked by fans. If not for the Champion’s League final, his stint would have been forgotten.

Chelsea’s need for a true winning manager led them to Big Phil Scolari. His credential is overwhelming. He won Brazil’s fifth World Cup title in 2002. His last job was coaching Portugal’s national team and steering them to Euro 2004 finals and 2006 World Cup semis. Scolari was the favourite to replace the beleaguered Grant.

Sometimes, in the big leagues, games are won by managers, and not by players. For the Chelsea owner, anything short of the title is a failure of the manager. He has to go. And richer he struts his way out.
